Why choose a 2D barcode scanner over a 1D barcode scanner?

1. 2D barcodes can store more information

2D barcodes offer several advantages over 1D barcodes. They can store a larger amount of data and even more complex information such as image links and network links. In contrast, 1D or linear barcodes can only accommodate around 20-25 characters. As the amount of data needed increases, so must the length of a 1D barcode. However, 2D barcodes allow for higher data density in a smaller space by using patterns, shapes, and dots to encode up to 2,000 characters.

In addition to holding more data, 2d barcodes can also contain images, web addresses, and binary data, making them more independent from databases compared to 1d barcodes. This enhances the efficiency of data access and increases the flexibility of smaller item label design.


2. 2D barcode scanner is more versatile

1D barcode scanners cannot scan 2D barcodes, but 2D barcode scanners are capable of scanning both 1D and 2D barcodes. 2D barcode scanners can scan various types of 2D barcodes, including Aztec, Intelligent Mail, PDF417, Data Matrix, QR Code and MaxiCode. Additionally, 2D barcode scanners can also scan traditional 1D barcodes such as Code 128, EAN, UPC and Code 39.

1D barcode scanners and 2D barcode scanners differ in the way they read barcodes. A 1D barcode scanner uses a laser or a camera to scan a barcode in a linear fashion, moving either horizontally or vertically along the barcode and decoding the series of bars and spaces that represent data. In contrast, a 2D barcode scanner uses a 2D imaging technology, such as a CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) or a CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) image sensor, to capture an entire 2D barcode image in one scan.

A 2D barcode scanner provides a more convenient and efficient scanning experience compared to a 1D scanner. With a 1D scanner, the scan line must be precisely aligned with the barcode in order for it to be read. However, a 2D barcode scanner has the ability to read barcodes from all angles, removing the need for strict alignment between the scanner and the barcode. Additionally, 2D barcode scanners can quickly and accurately capture the entire image of the barcode, even from a distance of up to 50 feet away.

It can still retrieve data from a poorly printed barcode thanks to its ability to correct error formulas. Additionally, even barcodes damaged by harsh conditions can be read by 2D barcode scanners.
